U.S. sociologist Paul Cameron, who came to Moldova on a visit, has been booed by a group of protesters. They waited for him in the place where Paul Cameron was to take part in an event and speak about the social impact of the antidiscrimination law, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Angela Frolov, coordinator of the Lobby and Advocacy Program of the Information Center GenderDoc-M, said Paul Cameron came to Moldova not for the first time. He causes social hatred and this is not good for the country and the people. “He is a pseudo-sociologist, pseudo-psychologist and pseudo-scientist, who was excluded from all the associations in his country. We want to prevent such persons from entering our country and from talking to our students and the press,” said Angela Frolov.
The head of the Public Policy Institute Arcadie Barbarosie said he came to support the initiative group that promotes the adoption of the antidiscrimination law in a form that would indeed promote nondiscrimination. “This protest is against this pseudo-researcher or pseudo-sociologist who comes to promote nothing else but messages of hatred. I personally do not like this message of hatred that is allegedly based on researches. I think the human rights are the supreme value in a state. If we want to build a society based on certain values, we must support this protest,” he stated.
Iuliana Marcinschi, project coordinator for the Nondiscrimination Coalition, said that Paul Cameron does not realize what damage he causes to the Moldovan society by his discourses that incite dissemination and hatred. “The U.S. sociologist tries by manipulation to convince public opinion that pedophilia and homosexuality are one and the same, but this is not true. I call on the politicians, the mass media and the universities that Paul Cameron will visit to be very attentive to the data that he provides because they are incorrect,” said Iuliana Marcinschi.
In reaction to the protest, Paul Cameron said that he is a licentiate in the field and is the author of a number of studies published in scientific journals. He stated that he in fact supports the homosexuals, but urges them to correct themselves. Commenting on protesters’ statements that he was excluded from the American Psychological Association, Cameron said it was true, but stated that the Association later changed its mind and called him back. As to the accusations that he provides inaccurate information, the sociologist said he is ready to take part in a debate with a specialist delegated by the protesters. He urged the Moldovan authorities not to adopt the antidiscrimination law as such a law can lead to an increase in the number of cases of sexual molestation of children.
The U.S. sociologist was invited to Moldova by the Association “For Family” and will stay until October 28.
