The Socialist Party welcomes the decision of the Euroitegration Alliance to give up the idea of holding a referendum and elect a non-partisan President, it said in a statement. “The Socialists are satisfied to see that it was due to its political communication strategy that it was possible to convince the Alliance's leadership to renounce the stillborn idea of holding a referendum and return to the course of a constructive dialogue with the opposition represented by the Socialist Party”, reads the statement. The Party's leader Igor Dodon said: “Now we have to proceed to what it was to be demonstrated, to what it was to be done: from accepting the solution to implementing it in practice. Now we need to see the Alliance's decision to elect a non-partisan President evolve as fast as possible towards the identification of a candidate and his subsequent election”. According to the Socialists, political compromises should be achieved only through civilized communication, the force of arguments and intelligent pressing. “A non-partisan President, if well selected, could mean a higher quality of governance in Moldova. This would allow for the reformation of the government and a higher degree of responsibility, so that the current governing force would not have any other excuses to justify its mistakes”, the Socialists said in their statement. The Alliance's decision to give up the intention of holding a constitutional referendum and to elect an unaffiliated President was voiced on Friday evening on national television. The Alliance leaders stated that this issue would be discussed at the first sitting of the spring/summer parliamentary session on February 16.
