The Socialists insist on the amendment of the Constitution so that the Head of State is empowered to appoint the prosecutor general. The issue was discussed in a meeting of the Socialist parliamentary group on November 23, IPN reports.

The Socialists decided that in the next sitting of Parliament, they will propose an initiative to amend the Constitution so that the President is given the prerogative to name the prosecutor general at the suggestion of the Superior Council of Prosecutors, based on a public contest.

“We assumed a public commitment to amend the Constitution and think that this is the only possibility of changing the situation in the field and of commencing radical reforms in this. The prosecutor general named by the President of the Republic of Moldova must be professional, honest, incorruptible, courageous and independent from the oligarchic system and interparty transactions,” said President-elect Igor Dodon.

The Socialist heavyweight noted that the prosecutor general will be obliged to ensure the correct investigation of a number of loud cases. “This will have to complete the investigation into the ‘theft of the century’, the stealing at Banca de Economii and the conceding of the Airport, the secret votes in the Government, appropriation of loans and grants and other crimes committed by the regime. This will be the start of the reform of the justice sector and law enforcement agencies in the Republic of Moldova, which will be aimed at ensuring the real independence of the judicial system and the law in the country,” concluded Dodon.
