The Party of Socialists (PSRM) presented a legislative initiative to amend the Constitution so that it allows for the direct election of the head of state, by the people. The party’s leader Igor Dodon told a news conference that the PSRM invites the other parliamentary groups to take part in the amendment of the supreme law, IPN reports.

“I call on the leaders of the parliamentary factions: in this anarchical chaos we need a powerful President and let’s hold early parliamentary elections simultaneously with the presidential elections. We offer them time until the end of July. If they do not agree, we will launch the procedure for amending the Constitution by a referendum,” stated Igor Dodon.

He commented on the outcome of the local elections, saying the PSRM obtained a very good result at a time when it didn’t have administrative and media resources. “We have 160 district councilors, as against 10 councilors earlier, 140 town councilors and rank first in the country by this indicator, and almost 1,000 village councilors. We have mayors in two district centers and in 50 villages. This result shows that the PSRM remains the main political force in Moldova. We already opened negotiations in a number of districts to form local coalitions. We will keep our word and will not form coalitions with the parties of Filat, Plahotniuc, Leanca, and Ghimpu. We agreed to form coalitions with the party of Renato Usatyi in seven districts. I think we will have a majority of seats in councils in 18 district centers,” said the politician.

Igor Dodon added that the PSRM won the largest number of seats in the Chisinau Municipal Council and the situation will yet change when the votes are recounted. “Our candidate for mayor general of Chisinau achieved a very good result in the run-off and tomorrow (July 1, e.n.) we will file all the required challenges and will demand annulling the results of the second round of voting. Regardless of the decisions that will be taken by the court, we will defend the interests of the residents of Chisinau who voted for us. The Socialist faction will be very active in the Chisinau Council,” he stated.

As to Parliament, Igor Dodon said the Socialists will not form coalitions with the ‘thieves, oligarchs and unionists’, noting a difficult period will follow, with higher electricity and gas charges and higher prices of products, and in the banking and currency sectors.

The chairman of the PSRM noted they will not take part in the negotiations on the formation of a new Government as this is not worth the effort in the current legislature.
