Members of the Party of Socialists said pressure is being exerted for adopting the Law on the Status of Chisinau Municipality that was drafted by Liberals and was passed by Parliament in the first reading. According to Socialist MPs and councilors of the Chisinau Council, the Liberals said they will vote the 2016 draft state budget only if the given law is adopted, IPN reports.

In a press briefing on June 8, the Socialists said that if the given bill is adopted, all the wrongdoings committed by the current Liberal mayor Dorin Chirtoaca during the last eight years will be legalized. By this law, the powers of the municipal councilors are limited, including the right to initiative. According to unofficial reports, the bill is to be passed by the legislative body tomorrow, June 9.

Also today, the Parliament’s commission on public administration, regional development, environment and climate change put off the examination of this bill at the request of the author, Liberal MP Stefan Vlas. The lawmaker invoked the submission of a number of amendments by the Socialist MPs.

The Liberals’ draft Law on the Status of Chisinau Municipality, which caused controversy among the members of the Chisinau Municipal Council and among MPs, was passed in the first reading two months ago. The Socialist MPs opposed the adoption of this bill, calling it abusive.
