The Head of State is supported by the Party of Socialists in the position that the institution of the uninominal voting system is inadmissible. In a press release, the party says the Socialists are against the introduction of uninominal voting for the parliamentary elections, IPN reports.

According to the Socialists, the elections by uninominal constituencies now would lead to the institution of full control over Parliament by the regime. Furthermore, the uninominal voting system that allows dismissing MPs has shortcomings besides advantages as any MP who would become inconvenient to the regime could be deprived of seat.

The Socialists consider the current electoral system requires profound changes to ensure the voting rights of the Moldovans who live in Transnistria and abroad. They make reference to the multiple calls to increase the number of polling places in Transnistria and overseas.

The Party of Socialists also supports the President’s initiative to reduce the number of MPs from 101 to 71, noting that this subject was raised by people in meetings with MPs and councilors all over the country.

The Socialists also said that the introduction of the uninominal voting system instead of the party-list proportional representation system endangers the existence of parties and parliamentarianism in Moldova. The Socialist parliamentary group calls on the MPs not to support this initiative and to use all the information, human and organizational resources to inform the Moldovans about the dangers and risks posed by this.
