The Socialist councilors on the Chisinau Municipal Council are initiating a referendum on the dismissal of Dorin Chirtoaca from the post of mayor of Chisinau. The leader of the Socialist group Ion Ceban told a news conference that an initiative group to deal with the organization of the referendum will be set up soon. In reaction, the mayor said the Socialists’ initiative lacks content and the Socialist councilors actually try to hide their own incompetence, IPN reports.

Ion Ceban said that the city now chokes because of ignorance, incompetence and indifference. Investors do not want to come to Chisinau owing to corruption and nepotism. All the projects are implemented with delay and inappropriately. The key posts are held by Liberals and the municipal enterprises are managed by Liberals. Chisinau is close to an ecological catastrophe.

The leader of the Socialist group also said that last year the Socialists initiated a referendum on the dismissal of Dorin Chirtoaca, but this was blocked in court. They prepared an application to the European Court of Human Rights. “I promise that this year Dorin Chirtoaca will be dismissed and elections will be held in Chisinau municipality next year so that the people choose the mayor they want, who will contribute to the development of our capital city,” stated Ion Ceban.

In another news conference, Dorin Chirtoaca said the Socialists’ initiative contains nothing new and actually lacks content and is designed to hide their incompetence. He enumerated the accomplishments of the last two years since the local elections, mentioning the repair of the Stair of Cascades in “Valea Morilor” Park, assembly of 40 trolleybuses, five of which without electrical cable, the repair of a number of streets, inauguration of lighting to the Airport and others.

“What do they come before the inhabitants with besides populism?” asked the mayor. According to him, the Socialists during the last two years only blocked the activity of the Chisinau Municipal Council and refused to support development projects. The energy efficiency project is a recent conclusive example. The Socialist councilors level criticism, but do not propose solutions for developing the municipality. By such initiatives as the referendum, they aim to cause hysteria and tension in society.
