The Party of Socialists (PSRM) continues to demand holding a referendum on the dismissal of the mayor general of Chisinau municipality Dorin Chirtoaca. On October 8, the party’s initiative group submitted an application to the Chisinau City Hall, asking including the holding of the plebiscite in the agenda of the Chisinau Council, IPN reports.
According to the leader of the PSRM Igor Dodon, the document was registered at the chancellery of the City Hall. They asked including the issue in the agenda of the next meeting of the Council. The idea of holding the referendum was discussed with a number of municipal councilors and the PSRM counts on their votes. “It’s not excluded that some of the Liberal councilors will also support our proposal,” said Igor Dodon. He added that a number of 60,000 signatures of Chisinau residents are needed to initiate the referendum, while the Socialists gathered more than 90,000.
The head of the City Hall’s PR Division Vadim Branzaniuc confirmed that the application was registered, but said the agenda of the October 10 meeting of the Chisinau Council was already approved. However, the proposal to hold the referendum may be included as an additional issue.
Unaffiliated Chisinau councilor Teo Carnat said the inhabitants of Chisinau municipality should allow the mayor to hold his tenure till the end. He added he will not support the PSRM’s initiative, but a part of the councilors, especially the Communists, indirectly back the idea of staging such a plebiscite.
