The Socialist MPs filed a challenge to the Constitutional Court (CC) by which they ask to establish the constitutionality of Electoral Code provisions that allow extending the President’s tenure for at least 90 days, IPN reports.

MP Adrian Lebedinschi said the government violates the Constitution, including by adopting injudicious legislative documents.

The MPs noted that in accordance with the Constitution, the term in office of the President of the Republic of Moldova is of four years and can be extended by organic law only in case of war or catastrophe, not by setting out norms in the Electoral Code.

“The President’s term cannot be extended based on dangerous legal games,” said the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Socialist Vlad Batrîncea. According to him, the CC should annul these amendments. The new President should be elected in October-November 2024 at the latest and should take an oath of office in December or it will be an attempt to usurp the power by illegally extending the President’s tenure.
