The Socialist and Liberal MPs will not vote for the introduction of the uninominal voting system, members of the Socialist and Liberal parliamentary groups assured in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, criticizing the uninominal voting system IPN reports.
Socialist MP Vasile Bolea considers the initiative to modify the electoral system could be rejected. “The initiative to introduce the uninominal voting system in an awkward one that was launched for being broadly discussed. Such discussions are needed for distracting attention from other really serious problems faced by the country,” he stated.
Liberal MP Lilian Carp said the uninominal voting system implies a number of risks. “Persons who have a lot of money and will be able to buy votes will enter Parliament. It is simpler to form a political majority in Parliament if the MPs are elected by party lists. There is a risk that the MPs elected by uninominal voting will deal only with the problems and interests of the communities that elected them, not yet with problems of national interest. Otherwise, the people from these communities could dismiss them,” he explained.
Politologist Alexandrul Solcan said the current electoral system has more shortcomings that appeared first in 2001. “The party-list electoral system generated a political class that discredited itself. The party lists include persons who are not known. If the government coalition hadn’t proposed such an initiative, it would have been criticized harshly by the people,” he stated.
