The Social-Democratic Party has voiced its intention to collect signatures for the initiation of a national referendum on Moldova's accession to the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Gathering over 1,000 people at a convention for the referendum on Saturday, the party's leader Victor Selin expressed his confidence about the success of the endeavor.
“According to some surveys published earlier this year, 46% of the respondents are willing to join the Eurasian Union and this number is constantly growing. That's why we are sure of success”, stated Victor Selin.
He announced that a bill would be proposed to launch negotiations with the Eurasian Union member countries. “Accession to this Union will offer many opportunities to the people living in these countries. Conditions will be created for attracting investments. People (in Moldova) will have more jobs, alongside people in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, and will have access to loans. Obviously prices will be lower too, by an estimated 20%, as all border procedures will be scrapped”, declared Selin.
A minimum of 200,000 signatures are required to initiate a referendum by the people. Signatures will start to be collected 15 days after the formal approval of the Central Election Commission.
