Social Democratic Party and Social Democracy Party have unified

The Social Democratic Party and the Social Democracy Party merged into one. The unification congress took place on December 22. According to a communiqué from the new party, the separate congresses of the two parties took place in the second half of December 22. At the congresses, the National Councils presented reports on the parties’ activity in the period between the congresses. The delegates approved the fusion principles and the fusion contract signed by parties’ presidents. The leaders of the two merging Social-Democratic parties said that the earlier alliances and electoral blocks formed with the aim of attaining momentary objectives disbanded after achieving the aims or after failing. Therefore, they consider that the unification can be durable only if it is done on the basis of doctrines centring on shared values and ideas. The congress established the principles and values of the European Social Democracy as foundation for the polices promoted by the Social Democratic Party and the conception of “Social Moldova” as strategic vision on Moldova’s future. The congress participants approved the new party’s statute and manifesto as well as the electoral colours – the traditional colours of the European Social Democracy - white and red, and the electoral symbol that represents two roses interwoven into a "martisor" - a trinket that is worn on March 1. By an absolute majority of votes expressed secretly, the delegates elected Dumitru Braghis as President of the Social Democratic Party, while Eduard Musuc was chosen as the party’s Secretary General. Immediately after the Congress, the National Council of Social Democratic Party held a meeting and chose Loretta Handrabura as chairwoman of the National Council. The Council also elected the party’s Political Bureau that consists of 24 members, including six vice chairpersons and six executive secretaries of the Social Democratic Party.
