“Migration deserves to be seen with different eyes” is the message of a social campaign launched by the Migrant Women Movement and UN Women Moldova on the occasion of International Migrants Day. During two months, there will be broadcast videos and staged public debates to present stories of migrant women and their contribution, IPN reports.
UN Women Country Representative in Moldova Ulziisuren Jamsran told a news conference that the campaign is designed to change the perception and stereotypes related to the image of migrant women in society. Video clips featuring migrant women, which explain the phenomenon, will be broadcast on radio and TV and through social networking sites from December 16 until February 16.
The official said there are different stereotypes in society related to migration among women, but nobody analyzes the contribution of these women to the country’s economy. According to her, the migrant women from Moldova send home by 700 million lei a year, which is a valuable contribution. 50% of the money sent home is for the needs of the children and this fact shows that the women want better living conditions for their families.
Olga Coptu, head of the Bureau for Diaspora Relations, said now the women represent 2/3 of the Moldovan diaspora. Besides the economic contributions they make, they are first of all women – mothers, sisters, daughters, etc. The perception of migrant women should be clear and not only through the angle of remittances, but also because a part of them are examples that should be promoted. The migrant women should also feel openness so that they are motivated to return home.
The social campaign “Migration deserves to be seen with different eyes” is carried out within the UN Women’s program “Promoting and protecting women migrant workers’ rights” that is financed by the Europeans Union.
