A six-story building can appear behind the Metropolitan Cathedral “God’s Birth” in Chisinau, instead of the former Parochial House. The decision was taken by the Metropolitan Church, which welcomed such a project, IPN reports.

Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca Monday said there are two projects to reconstruct the Parochial House according to its exact parameters, but the Metropolitan Church asks for another type of construction. “This way, we risk to affect the Cathedral. Moreover, the City Hall provides 1 million lei for the reconstruction project. Maybe we should erect an apartment building there for the least sinful ones? I see no logic. We spoke about the reconstruction of the Parochial House. Where the idea of the six-story building appeared from?” asked the mayor.

Ion Carpov, head of the Architecture, Urbanism and Land Relations Division, said the reconstruction projects were designed by architect Gicu Bulat, who also worked out the project to reconstruct the complex of the Cathedral, including the belfry and the holy water house. The architect proposed three variants for reconstructing the Parochial House, but the representatives of the Metropolitan Church pleaded for a six-story building.

In this connection, the mayor asked Ion Carpov to obtain the three draft projects and make them public so that civil society can pronounce on them.

Last May, Dorin Chirtoaca had a meeting with His Holiness Vladimir, the Metropolitan Bishop of Chisinau and All Moldova, where they discussed the reconstruction of the Parochial House. The building existed behind the Cathedral until 1969, when the then authorities of Chisinau decided to set up the first water pumping unit there. During the discussions it was agreed that the building will be put in commission this May.
