Update /3:15pm/ Twenty-five persons were questioned today, October 19, by officers of the National Anticorruption Center after carrying out searches in their offices and homes within criminal cases started over corruption. Among these are three employees of the General Architecture, Urbanism and Land Relations Division of the Chisinau City Hall. Six persons were detained, namely the Division’s deputy head and two inferiors, a technical expert and two intermediaries, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Center said that through the agency of persons who interacted witty applicants for documents, functionaries of the City Hall hastened the issuing of authorizations and certificates for building, reconstructing or re-planning buildings. For the provided services, the applicants paid large sums of money to intermediaries who, for their part, transmitted a part of the money to functionaries of the Division.

The given persons are suspected of passive corruption and influence peddling.

Update/12 noon/. The National Anticorruption Center said the case involves functionaries of the Chisinau City Hall, intermediaries and beneficiaries of their services. Seventeen persons were detained for questioning.

Officers of the National Anticorruption Center are conducting searches at a number of addresses in the capital city, including at the Chisinau City Hall. The Center’s press officer Angela Starinski has told IPN that the searches are carried out within a criminal case started over acts of corruption.

A number of persons were escorted to the National Anticorruption Center for being questioned. Details will be provided in the course of the day.
