A group of MPs of the PAS group of the ACUM Bloc ask to declare an ecological crisis in Moldova. MPs Dumitru Alaiba, Doina Gherman, Veronica Roșca, Galina Sajin, Virgil Pârslariuc and Oazu Nantoi registered a statement with the Parliament’s Secretariat and request the lawmakers to approve it at one of the plenary sittings of Parliament, IPN reports.
According to the statement that was made public by Dumitru Alaiba, “the ecological crisis is the next big threat to the existence of everyone. The pollution of air, water and soil, the inefficient management of waste, the inefficient regulation of environmental protection and the policies that do not encourage a change of attitude risk to seriously affect the health of the population and of the next generations and to hamper the sustainable development of the country. Yes, the politicians should deal with the ecological problems as these necessitate political decisions.”
The statement notes that “Moldova has the most polluted rivers in Europe, the smallest forest area in Europe, the largest number of waste dumps per capital and air that can be hardly breathed in, while the increasing number of dog days and the incidence of extreme meteorological phenomena, correlated with global warming, which were forecast to grow in frequency and intensity during the next decades, cause damage to agriculture and, implicitly, to the national economy.”
The MPs noted that the state protected natural areas in Moldova represent only 5.8% of the country’s territory and efficient conservation of biological biodiversity is thus not ensured. “The national forest fund officially constitutes only 13.2% of the country’s area, much under the European average of 40%. The forest area has remained unchanged for five years despite the newly planted wooded areas.”
According to the MPs, the ecological problem should be recognized as it becomes more dangerous and devastating than any world war. “The whole planet is in flames. Our country cannot be an exception. The parliaments of an increasing number of countries declared an ecological crisis in a move to step up action and determination. We should not be an exception. It would be irresponsible to deny, ignore, remain silent,” says the statement.
