Lawyer Vitalie Taulean said a criminal case was fabricated based on a calumnious denouncement. Radu Vartic, who is the father of six children, was arrested on April 29, after a Russian citizen who hired him to demolish a house and to build another one instead accused him of theft.
In a news conference at IPN, the lawyer said that based on a contract signed by the sides, the money for the works were paid in tranches and his clients fulfilled his obligations. Radu Vartic has a receipt showing that he received €5,000 for the works. When the works were completed, the owner said he wasn’t satisfied with their quality and tried to force Radu Vartic to purchase the constructed building for €75,000. The lawyer has all the receipts and checks showing that Radu Vartic spent the money received from the Russian citizen on building materials. “The fact that the money for works was paid regularly shows that the owner was satisfied with the works,” stated the lawyer.
He also said that the criminal case was started in the absence of real grounds, based on purely civil relations, “They probably thought that if this person builds homes, he has a lot of money,” stated the lawyer. He considers that the building owner must be held accountable for calumny, while the representatives of the law enforcement bodies for misconduct in office because they started a criminal case at a time when the contract relations are regulated by the Civil Code.
Radu Vartic’s wife Aliona told the journalists that last yearend, her husband was told to offer bribe so that the charges against him be dropped. He refused and thus the criminal case was started. The woman was told that she can save her husband from jail if she pays €3,000.
Aliona Vartic added that he husband was the only maintainer of the family. Their smallest child is one year. Three children are sick and need medical care. When Radu Vartic was arrested, he had a broken rib. The man also suffers from hepatitis.
