The unilateral installation by the Transnistrian administration of the checkpoints in Varnita last night is a challenge, the executive director of Promo-LEX Association Ion Manole stated for IPN. According to him, the Transnistrian administration profits from the difficult political situation in Moldova and tests the reaction of the Moldovan constitutional authorities.

According to Ion Manole, all constitutional authorities’ attempts to resolve the Transnistrian dispute are useless, while the situation is worsening in all spheres. Russia and Moldova signed an agreement on free movement in 1992. By setting up checkpoints unilaterally, Russia shows how it respects the international commitments. In fact, Russia does not care about the signed agreement and this is serious.

“The steps taken by the Transnistrian administration pursue certain goals. The separatists want to see how the Moldovan authorities will behave in such cases as challenges, different scenarios. In this situation, we don’t know what measures will be taken to solve the Transnistrian conflict, which has lasted for over 20 years,” added the expert.

Ion Manole underlined that the attempt to abusively install checkpoints in the Security Zone is not a novelty. The separatist Transnistrian authorities set up a checkpoint in Varnita in 2004, but it was removed shortly afterward, after the locals blocked several roads with concrete blocks.

On the night of April 27, the Transnistrian administration decided to install checkpoints near Varnita. The Transnistrian authorities argued that this way they try to prevent smuggling.
