Two men died in fires caused by smoldering cigarettes in Ocnita and Cimislia districts. Liliana Puscasu, press officer of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, has told Info-Prim Neo that one of the men, aged 44, was from Unguri, Ocnita.
According to employees of the local mayor’s office, the man had lived alone as his wife divorced him several years ago. Their two children remained with the mother. The man had worked as a tractor driver for over 20 years and abused school lately. It is not known if he was drunk when the tragedy struck.
A 73-year-old man died from carbon monoxide positioning in a fire in Cenac, Cimislia. As in the first case, the man allegedly fell asleep with the burning cigarette.
More than half of the fatal fires that happened so far this year were caused by smoldering cigarettes. Sixty persons died in them.
The Civil Protection and Emergencies Service warns against smoking inside the homes or in bed and against throwing smoldering cigarettes in the garbage bin.
