Significant part of the population regrets USSR’s collapse

More than a half of the respondents (53.8%) who participated in a sociological poll regret the collapse of the former USSR. The survey, entitled “Moldova, 15 years of independence: achievements, problems and aspirations”, drawn up by the Independent Centre of Sociology and Information “Opinia”, in partnership with the Media Institute, was launched in Chisinau on Tuesday, December 26. According to the poll, only 36% of the respondents do not regret the collapse of the USSR. At the same time, 52% of the respondents would choose the life before 1991 if it would have been possible, and 40% - the present life. Looking at how much the economic situation has changed in 15 years of independence, about two thirds, 63.6% consider that it worsened. Only 14% consider that the economic situation in the transition period did not change. At the same time, almost 60% of the respondents state that the material situation of their families worsened after the proclamation of independence, of which 27.8% say that it has considerably worsened. 20.88% said that the material situation of their families is better, and 16% said that it did not change. 54.5% of the questioned persons said that they were disadvantaged by the changes occurred in Moldova after 1991. The opinion poll was carried out during December 11-20, on a sample of 1153 persons from 53 towns and villages in Moldova, except for the Transnistrian region. The sampling error of the poll constitutes 3%.
