The civic initiative group “Protection of Animals in Moldova” has submitted a petition with 1,600 signatures collected during two weeks in Chisinau and Balti, by which they ask adopting a law on the protection of animals and signing the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights and the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals. The initiative group also staged a protest in front of the Chisinau City Hall, demanding that the local authorities build a shelter for street animals, IPN reports.
Initiative group member Alexandru Melniciuc said that dead dogs are found on the street daily. “The animals are killed by employees of the cleanup company “Autosalubritate”, at the instruction of the Chisinau City Hall. We are here to say NO to cruelty to animals without shelter,” he stated.
Another militant for animal protection in Moldova Vitalie Popov said the authorities allocated a plot on which to erect an animal shelter, but that plot is situated in an area where there is no sewerage and electric power.
The International Animal Rights Day is marked yearly on October 4.
