The Declaration of Independence of Moldova didn’t appear accidentally. It’s signing succeeded a number of events that prepared the Moldovan political and economic elite for action, senior lecturer at the Teacher Training University “Ion Creanga” Sergiu Cataraga said in the program “Place for Dialogue” on the public radio station Radio Moldova, IPN reports.
According to Sergiu Cataraga, an important role was played by Gorbachev’s perestroika launched in 1985. It paved the way for the democratization of society of the former USSR. Otherwise, Moldova would have been unable to obtain language, Latin script and its independence.
The lecturer approved of the people’s contribution to gaining independence. “After 1985, four years of assiduous work followed, which helped us understand that we must not limit ourselves to sovereignty only. After Moldova declared its sovereignty, there were different opinions as to the subsequent course. Some pleaded for remaining a component part of the USSR, while others for uniting with Romania,” said Sergiu Cataraga.
He also said that though Moldova proclaimed its sovereignty, representatives of the Russian administration categorically opposed the democratization of Moldovan society and the restoration of the national values. This showed that the sovereignty within the USSR could not be realized otherwise. Thus, the Declaration of Independence was signed in less than a year after the proclamation of sovereignty.
According to the lecturer, the return to the spiritual values, namely the Romanian language and Latin script, played a special role after the proclamation of independence.
