Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan considers the Moldovan government’s intention to introduce the uninominal voting system is a sign of alarm showing that democracy in the Republic of Moldova hasn’t been strengthened and this fact should worry the European partners. The MEP made such a statement over the phone within the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Muresan called on the politicians of Moldova not to repeat Romania’s negative experience concerning the uninominal voting system. “By uninominal voting, barons with financial power were enabled to enter Parliament. This way, Romania’s Parliament became a gathering of people who had enough money to do nothing else but recover this money,” he stated.

In the same program, Pavel Postica, programs director at the public organization “Promo-Lex”, said the elimination of the shortcomings existing in the current electoral legislation is the first step that should be taken. The replacement of the electoral system can be discussed afterward.

Ion Guzun, jurist at the Legal Resources Center of Moldova, considers it would be a catastrophe to change now the electoral system as the voters would be confused to a greater extent. ”The deficiencies identified earlier by the Constitutional Court should be removed from the electoral system,” he stated.

On the other hand, jurist Vitali Catana said the uninominal voting system will ensure greater transparency and correctness in the electoral process. “In time the parties were reproached for the fact that the electoral rolls are compiled in a not sufficiently transparent way and that the party leader decides everything and brings docile persons to Parliament,” he explained.
