MEP Siegfried Muresan considers the EU should designate a high representative who would maintain the dialogue with the Moldovan authorities in managing Moldova’s European course, IPN reports.

“I support and want to launch for public debate in Romania and Brussels the following idea: I think the European Union needs to designate a high representative for each conflict area or each state that is now of strategic importance or in which a series of events that need increased attention on the part of the EU take place. The Republic of Moldova is one of these states, which has witnessed a long period of political instability,” the MEP said, quoted by the Romanian news agency Agerpres.

The MEP added that there is a rupture at technical level in the EU between the diplomats who monitor the situation in such states as the Republic of Moldova, but do not have the power to decide and do not have access and political influence on the decision-makers of these states at the highest level.

“It’s simply inhuman and institutionally impossible for one person to daily pay attention to 20 countries, 20 conflicts. We see the situation in the Republic of Moldova and in Macedonia, where European support was needed for holding new elections. We see the escalation of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, not speaking about the situation in Ukraine, Crimea,” stated Muresan.

He added that there are situations when many things can be lost if the reaction is delayed for 24 hours and Moldova needs now a high representative for the implementation of the Association Agreement. “When the Government of Moldova does not fulfill its commitments and there are discrepancies between the statements of intent and what is really done, this high representative can daily remind the Government what its obligations are and what commitments its assumed before the EU and make sure that these commitments are fulfilled,” he stated.

According to the MEP, such high representatives are needed in Moldova, Ukraine, Crimea and Macedonia and these could be named by the President of the European Commission.
