Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan said that all the procedures for the disbursement of the €100 million announced earlier by the European Union were performed and the promised financial support will reach Chisinau in June-July. Moreover, the EU offered Moldova another €53 million in budget support. The official is sure that the Republic of Moldova will soon obtain the candidate country status and the accession negotiations will start immediately afterward, IPN reports.

MEP Siegfried Mureșan said the population with modest incomes, the enterprises hit by the energy crisis and the farmers affected by the high fuel prices will benefit from support from the Government of the Republic of Moldova owing to the European financial support.

“The European Union’s financial support for the Republic of Moldova is intended for the energy sector, for border control and also for budget support. These European funds can be used by the Government during the next months to help the people who need it. The European Parliament approved €150 million in macro-financial assistance for the Republic of Moldova and the European Commission also proposed an additional €53 million. All the procedures were performed and the money will get to Chisinau in June and July. This means that all the vulnerable categories of population, people impacted by the higher inflation, farmers affected by the rise in fuel prices can be helped with the European funds,” Siegfried Mureșan stated in the program “In Depth” on ProTV channel.

Moreover, the official said the resolution that was recently adopted by the European Parliament in favor of Chisinau is a clear signal that the Republic of Moldova deserves the candidate country status and this status can be obtained at the European summit of June 23-24 or during the next meetings of the European Council.

“The Republic of Moldova will become an accession candidate country and will later become a member of the European Union. I’m absolutely sure of this. We must be honest that a number of steps need to be covered. We now must wait for the response of the European Commission that will analyze the questionnaire. After the Republic of Moldova officially becomes a candidate country, the negotiations on 30 chapters will be opened for the reality in the Republic of Moldova and its legislation to be aligned with the reality in the European Union. The European Council, which consists of the EU heads of state and government, mandatorily meets for four times a year. So, the Republic of Moldova can obtain this status now or in three or six months. I consider this will happen soon, at one of the next meetings of the Council,” stated the Romanian MEP.

In connection with the submission by Moldova of the application for EU membership, President Maia Sandu on May 17-18 will be paying a working visit to Brussels. On May 18, the official will give a speech in the European Parliament and will later hold a press conference together with the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.
