Sic! What Dodon’s Congress can (not) solve?

The World Congress of Families that is organized on the initiative of the President of Moldova Igor Dodon is a gathering of homophobe and sexist conservatives who defend their views with fake studies and are financed in an obscure way by Russian oligarchs. The authors of a new article of the Sic! project, which is accompanied by a video, say that by organizing this Congress, half a year before the elections, the President wants to show to the country and the whole world who is the biggest familyist in Moldova, IPN reports.

The authors analyzed the speech given by President Dodon at the festival of the traditional family where he warned that he accepts only normal families in Moldova. These note that Vasile Lupu’s Romanian Learning Book of  1646 clearly says that the women can be beaten with impunity by their husbands if the wives bear the blame even slightly. Dimitrie Cantemir wrote about how the Moldovan women drank alcohol until they vomited, while the people’s sayings give such advice as “an unbeaten woman is like an unclean house”. The woman was to be obedient and give birth to many children so that at least several of these survived.

The old family was not at all the happiest environment for a woman, say the Sic! authors. The situation nowadays is not better. According to a report of 2011, two in tree women in Moldova were subject to physical, mental or sexual violence at least once. 12 children of 1,000 die during the first year of life. Over 136,000 children have at least one parent working abroad. Over 110,000 minors have to work.

The World Congress of Families prefers the natural family. The formula is the marriage between a man and a woman, preferably several children, and abstinence before the marriage and elimination of divorce as a bonus. Such elements as the last two are optional as the definition of the natural family should be sufficiently fluid to reconcile the conservatives of different denominations and cults. The Congress comes to explain ‘what should not exist’ clearer than what the natural family is, namely: homosexual couples, single parents, couples in fornication, divorced couples, etc.

The Sic! authors note the natural family is not a problem in Moldova, while Christianism is not in danger. The largest part of the population is indeed Orthodox-Christian. The demographic problem of Moldova is actually pressing, but not because of homosexuality. Migration, poverty, healthcare, lack of confidence in the future, theft of the US$ 1 billion, corruption, political decadence and domestic violence are much more real problems that affect the Moldovan family, no matter how “natural”, “normal” or “traditional” it is.

According to Sic!, the World Congress of Families is just an attempt made by the President to distract public attention from the country’s real problems and this shows inability or unwillingness to deal with them. The full article in the Romanian is available here.
