Transnistrian leader Yevgeny Shevchuk rejected the amendments to Transnistria’s legislation providing for the exclusion of the statute of limitations for murder. The changes were adopted by the region’s Supreme Soviet earlier this month, IPN reports.

According to “Novyi Region” Agency, the Supreme Soviet didn’t agree that the law should have a retroactive effect, as Yevgeny Shevchuk proposed. The Transnistrian leader said that if the law comes into force without retroactive effect, the persons who killed about 300 people until now and weren’t found guilty will not get punishment for their crimes. The amendments are to be examined again by the Supreme Soviet.

The Criminal Code of Moldova provides for statute of limitations of 25 years for exceptionally grave cases. This means that 25 years after the commission of the crime, the person can no longer be held criminally accountable.
