The accommodation and orientation center for persons without a stable domicile located on Haltei St in Chisinau houses 85-90 persons at a time when its capacity is of 70 places. Contacted by IPN, the institution’s director Andrei-Gavriil Rotaru said that during frosty weather the center accepts all those who do not have where to sleep. Last year the center could accommodate up to 130 persons after more beds were put up there.

Andrei-Gavriil Rotaru noted that under an order made by the municipal authorities earlier, the homeless persons can stay at the institution for 150 days.

Spokesman for the National Pre-hospital Emergency Medical Assistance Center Diana Blanaru has told IPN that three women aged between 49 and 60 called an ambulance after suspecting hypothermia during the past three days. It is not known if these are persons without a home or not.

The subject was also discussed in the January 15 meeting of officials of Chisinau services and divisions. Health Division head Mihai Moldovanu said the number of applications for accommodation from homeless persons is on the rise. Those who need medical care are taken to the hospital, while the others to the shelter on Haltei St. Four persons who suffered from hypothermia have been hospitalized.
