A man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for attempting to rape a 15-year-old girl two years ago in a forest in the north of the country. The teenager managed to escape after resisting and because bystanders intervened, IPN reports.
According to the General Prosecutor's Office (PG), the case took place on June 29, 2022, at night, the defendant, being in a forest in the north of the country, intending to have forced sexual intercourse and satisfy his sexual lust with a 15-year-old minor, by physical coercion, pushed her, knocked her to the ground. He did not carry out his intention to the end, as the victim resisted, but people who were driving nearby intervened and reacted, the PG reports.
By the sentence of November 20, the defendant was found guilty of committing the crime and sentenced to imprisonment for 7 years in a semi-closed prison. The sentence is not final and is subject to appeal to the Balti Court of Appeal.
"This conviction represents not only a sanction proportionate to the seriousness of the offenses committed, but also a warning to those who might be tempted to break the law. The sentence also reaffirms the authorities' commitment to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, demonstrating that any attempt to violate them is duly punished", the General Prosecutor's Office said.
