Seven settlements elected mayors in first round of voting

Seven localities of the ten in which snap mayoral elections were held on May 29 elected their mayors in the first round of voting. The Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) and the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) won the mayoral elections in two settlements each, while the representatives of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), the People Power Party (PPP) and the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” (PPPDA) won in one settlement each. Runoffs will be held in two weeks in another three villages in which none of the candidates gained more than 50% of the vote, IPN reports, quoting preliminary data of the Central Election Commission.

This way, Valentina Bejenaru, of BCS, won the election in Moara de Piatră village of Drochia district with 64% of the ballot.

In Horodiște village of Rezina district, 89% of the electors voted for PAS candidate Dorel Iurcu.

In Tătărești village of Strășeni district, the election was won by PPP candidate Vladimir Celeev with over 64% of the poll.

In Hagimus village of Căușeni district, the office of mayor was won by PLDM candidate Veaceslav Cucherov with 59% of the vote.

Victor Tăbîrța, of BCS, won the election in Zăicani village of Râșcani district with 91% of the ballot.

In Bobeica village of Hâncești district, the election was won by the candidate of PPPDA with 58% of the poll.

In Lozova, Strășeni, the candidate of PLDM won the mayoralty with about 56% of the ballot.  

A runoff vote in two weeks will be held in Zastânca village of Soroca district, Glinjeni village of Fălești district and Ghetlova village of Orhei district.

In accordance with the Electoral Code, the candidate for mayor is considered elected if this wins over half of the valid votes cast by the electors. Runoffs involving two candidates with the largest scores are held if none of the contenders wins over 50% of the ballot.

Snap mayoral elections on May 29 took place in ten villages of the Republic of Moldova.
