Seven staff members at the Lipscani Prison will stand trial for torturing an inmate after the prosecutors finalized accusation formalities and forwarded the case to court, IPN reports.

According the Prosecutor General's Office, the accused include the prison warden, the chief supervisor, the chief of the education service and four guards. The prosecutors found that in June 2013, the group gave a beating to an inmate for insulting the warden. They punched and kicked him, causing the victim to suffer multiple bruises, otitis and other injuries, as confirmed in the medical report.

The prosecutors first learned about the ill-treatment of the prisoner from his mother and started an investigation. In order to ensure the victim's safety, he was moved to another prison.

The Moldovan law punishes torture with 8 to 15 years in jail.

After this incident, the warden of the Lipscani Prison no.2 was redeployed as deputy commander of the Carabineer Troops, but continued his misdoings and was accused by the military prosecutors of abuse of authority and causing serious damage to the interests of the state and of the victim. He was sacked and fined 3000 lei, fully repaying the material damage.
