On June 14, the citizens of Moldova will vote the new local administration. IPN News Agency set the goal to determine how the local public authorities coped during the current term that is coming to an end. Experts, opinion leaders and representatives of civil society from different settlements will assess the activity of the local authorities of the country’s districts and municipalities. Calarasi district has 43 settlements and 28 mayor’s offices. The population of the district is over 78,000.
Coordinator of the Calarasi Access to Information and Training Community Center Valeriu Gorincioi said the district’s authorities during the last four years ensured the existence, not yet the development. According to him, a serious territorial-administrative reform is needed so as to ensure real decentralization and greater transparency in managing public money.
The necessities remained those of the previous years – creation of workplaces, including in the service sector, improvement of the infrastructure by repairing the roads, schools, etc. Water supply and sewerage systems and alternative sources of energy are needed. Agriculture should be developed based on modern technologies.
Valeriu Gorincioi considers that the promises made in the previous election campaign were 40 – 50% fulfilled. There are mayor’s offices that achieved relevant results. For example, the Temeleuti mayor’s office implemented projects to the value of 17 million lei. Calarasi town coped worse, banking more on money from the state budget. The local public authorities should be able to manage the money directly from the Ministry of Finance, but should also attract more funds from the development partners.
The coordinator of the Calarasi Access to Information and Training Community Center said the people no longer believe in empty promises and only those who did at least something for the settlement, who have authority at local level and didn’t discredit themselves have chances in the coming elections.
