Serghei Toma, president of the Labor Party and potential presidential candidate, requests the Central Electoral Commission to annul the registration initiative groups which allegedly violated the registration period provided by presidential electoral regulations.

Serghei Toma told a press conference that following the examination of several documents, he found that assembly meetings for the establishment of eight initiative groups took place on September 1, in violation of group creation regulations.

"In accordance with the provisions of the Regulation on the particularities of nomination and registration of candidates for elections for the position of President of the Republic of Moldova, approved by CEC decision, I request the annulment of the above-mentioned CEC Decisions", said Serghei Toma.

"The law says that the registration period starts 60 days before the beginning of the elections. If we consult the calendar, considering that the elections are set for November 1, we can observe that the month of October has 31 days, while September has 30 days. If the initiative groups are registered on September 1, the registration is in violation of the law", explained Serghei Toma.

The Regulation on the particularities of nominating and registering candidates for the election of the President of the Republic of Moldova provides that “the nomination of candidates for the office of President of the Republic of Moldova shall be made starting 60 days before election date and ending 30 days before election day. Both individual and collective applicants may not start the process of submitting candidates for the position of President of the Republic of Moldova before the beginning of the period, while no documents are issued before this date, as provided for in point four of this regulation".
