The Transnistrian authorities blocked Tuesday, August 28, a consignment of textbooks from reaching to the students of the Lucian Blaga Lyceum based in Tiraspol. At approximately 3:00pm, at the checkpoint of the peacekeeping troops near the city of Tighina, persons who introduced themselves as representatives of the Tiraspol regime seized a vehicle transporting 900 textbooks to the Lucian Blaga Lyceum. The consignment was accompanied by principle Ion Iovcev, Ludmila Savin, the librarian of the lyceum, and Nicolae Fachira, member of the parents’ council. A statement by the Helsinki Committee of Human Rights in Moldova (CHDOM) says that the reason for seizing the consignment hasn’t been explicitly announced, and by acting so the representatives of the self-proclaimed regime have violated a series of human rights as regards the administration of the high-school. CHDOM states that the present format of the peace-keeping troops is inefficient and considers that this is the perfect time to either abolish it altogether or to replace it by another format, by attracting the EU member states into the peace-keeping mechanism. The Committee also urges the relevant bodies to bring guarantees for safeguarding the human rights and fundamental freedoms in the security zone, and for observing Moldova’s Constitution and laws in operation.
