The second radar capable of detecting drones will arrive in the Republic of Moldova in the first half of next year and will become operational immediately after installation. This information was confirmed to IPN by the Ministry of Defense. The new system will enable the detection, tracking, and identification of aerial targets, including aircraft, helicopters, and drones, providing three-dimensional data in a 3D format.

"The new radar will significantly enhance the defense capabilities and the airspace surveillance process of the Republic of Moldova", stated the Ministry of Defense.

The contract for the radar acquisition was signed on April 5, 2024, and the system will be delivered and installed two years after the contract signing. However, details such as the range and cost of the acquisition remain confidential. The Ministry mentioned that the project is financially supported by the European Union through the European Peace Facility and the Estonian Defense Investment Center.

The new radar will complement a similar system acquired in December 2023 through the French company THALES. The system, considered "vital for strengthening air defense capabilities," was purchased using the national defense budget. Minister Anatolie Nosatîi explained that the new radars are essential for monitoring airspace and ensuring the safety of citizens.

"In the current security context, the safety of our citizens is a priority. Recent incidents of airspace violations have highlighted the urgent need to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Republic of Moldova," stated Nosatii.

Modernizing the army has become a priority for the authorities, given that, according to the Ministry of Defense, 90% of Moldova's military equipment is of Soviet origin and does not meet modern operational requirements. These new acquisitions are part of a broader effort to modernize and adapt the National Army to international standards.
