The Sculeni customs and border crossing was re-inaugurated on Thursday after being modernized as part of the RMCO Project, funded by the European Union and co-financed by the Government of Moldova and the Government of Romania.

The surface area of the facility has been more than doubled to boost operational capacity, with the number of inspection lanes now increased to 7 on either side. It was also furnished with state-of-the-art equipment, including a stationary X-ray scanning system for goods and vehicles.

At the same time, with the financial support of the European Union, through the International Organization for Migration, the video surveillance system was modernized and LED billboards were installed, which will post information for travelers regarding the new customs legislation and border crossing rules.

The rehabilitation project has cost over 135 million lei.

“The general objective of the RMCO Project is to modernize the customs posts at the Moldovan-Romanian border and improve the conditions for carrying out customs control according to international requirements, which will increase institutional and operational efficiency, by facilitating international trade and streamlining the cross-border traffic of goods and passengers”, the Customs Service said in a press release.
