The Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) will have its powers reduced and it will no longer act as the second appeals court as now. This is stipulated in a bill that was approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday, IPN reports.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the diminution of powers will lead to a reduction in the number of decisions passed by the SCJ and emphasis will be placed on the ordering of the method of interpreting and implementing the law in the justice system. Also, the procedure for examining cases will be debureaucratized.

According to Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, the bill is aimed at creating the basic conditions needed for transforming the SCJ into a court of cassation whose main role will be to standardize judicial practice. The goal of the initiative is to improve the quality of justice and to modify the reasons based on which requests for appeals in penal, civil and administrative cases can be made and accepted.

The bill is to be considered and passed by the legislative body.
