The Ministry of Education, Culture and Research has announced school uniforms will not be mandatory, but still recommended.
Local education authorities are nevertheless expected to report by October 23 to the Ministry on the steps taken to promote the introduction of school uniforms.
A massive poll involving nearly 300,000 students, teachers and parents conducted in April-May showed that 82% were in favor of the idea.
As a result, the Ministry instructed education authorities and schools to contribute to raising awareness of the need for school uniforms and “decent appearance” of pupils. The instructions included the request that schools use strategies to motivate pupils and parents to accept “decent vestments”.
