Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca asked that the salaries of the directors of companies funded from the municipal budget be limited to 4,500-5,000 lei, Info-Prim Neo reports. At Tuesday's meeting of the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC), the mayor said it was not right that the directors of companies financed from the state budget, which are often bankrupt, receive salaries of 15,000-20,000 lei as the administrators of Termocom, Apa-Canal Chisinau, the Electric Transport Company and other companies. “They are paid European salaries from the taxes and tariffs paid by the population,” the mayor said. “It is not right when a company director has a salary that is 3-4 times higher than that of the deputy mayors, who have the same responsibility for the company that they coordinate.” The mayor asked the CMC to approve the salary grades for the managers of municipal companies and joint stock companies in which the Council owns major holdings, insisting that the salary of a director should not exceed 4,500-5,000 lei. Communist councilor Valery Pavlov said the mayor's initiative is acceptable, but can run counter to the legislation. “What right do we have to set the salary grades? This is the Government's prerogative,” he said. Social Democratic Emil Gutu said the CMC can impose limits on the municipal companies, not yet on the joint stock companies. “As a founder, the CMC has the right to negotiate the salary of the director of the joint stock company when signing the contract,” the mayor said. Though some of the councilors were against, most of them accepted the mayor's proposal with slight modifications. The Communist and Humanist councilors did not take part in the vote.
