Russian should remain a language of communication between nations, as the current legislation provides. Such an opinion was stated in the program “Key issue” on NTV Moldova channel, IPN reports.
Chairman of the public association “Voievod” Nicolae Pascaru said languages that are convenient for the population should be spoken in the Republic of Moldova. The legislation should not be amended and Russian should remain a language of communication between nations. Such an amendment is very dangerous. In Ukraine, the maidan started following changes made in the linguistic legislation.
Politologist Boris Shapovalov said the Liberals’ initiative is an electoral one. The Liberal Party’s rating is very low and the Liberals try to make themselves heard and seen by the voters.
Vitalia Pavlichenco, leader of the National Liberal Party, said the current provision on the Russian language contained in the law on the spoken languages is outdated and should be modified. Owing to this initiative, there will be greater harmony in society as it is the most painful issue.
The Liberal Party announced its intention to request the Constitutional Court to check the constitutionality of five laws that provide that the Russian language is a language of communication between nations. According to the Liberals, the law on the languages spoken on the territory of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic adopted in 1989 runs counter to the Constitution as, by offering it the status of communication language, Russian replaces the official language.
