Russian State Duma deputy Roman Hudeakov sent a letter to the Russian Foreign Ministry asking considering the possibility of recognizing the independence of the Transnistrian region, with its subsequent integration into Russia.

Contacted by IPN, head of the Chisinau Reintegration Office George Balan said that Russia recognizes the territorial integrity of Moldova and the initiatives of MPs cannot serve as reasons for reaction in Chisinau.

According to the Transnistrian agency “Novostipmr”, in his letter the Russian deputy makes reference to the situation in Ukraine, saying the Russian ethnics are subject to pressure. Roman Hudeakov asserts the about 200,000 Russians from the Transnistrian region are also exposed to risks.

George Balan said the Moldovan authorities can make comments only if the Kremlin administration makes official statements as to the recognition of the Transnistrian region as an independent state.
