Russia should participate in solving the problems in neighboring countries instead of pouring oil on fire. The statement was made at a press conference in Chisinau by MEP Hannes Swoboda, head of the group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, European Parliament’s rapporteur for the Russian Federation. The statements were made after a meeting with the head of the Democratic Party of Moldova Marian Lupu. According to the European official, Moldova should tend towards the European Union, which is a union of democratic countries and free nations. “Moldova’s place must be in the EU. It’s not only about the economic aspect, but also about the European values shared by Moldova. We support the government’s efforts in defending territorial integrity and settling the Transnistrian conflict”, said Hannes Swoboda. The European parliamentarian admitted that the EU was facing some issues, but it remained a union of democratic countries. “What can the other union (Eurasian) offer to Moldova? The concept is that in Europe borders aren’t important anymore. Moldova must head towards a Europe without borders”, added Hannes Swoboda. Marian Lupu stated, for his part, that the delegation of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament traveled to Moldova to highlight the support Moldova has from European partners and the support on its path of European integration. Hannes Swoboda also met with representatives of the Liberal Party and other party leaders.
