Moscow is concerned about the signals that Moldova could change its status of neutrality or develop the cooperation relations with the North-Atlantic bloc, head of the Department of European Security of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Danilov said, being quoted in the bulletin “Transnistrian dialogues”, IPN reports.

“For Russia, there is a very important aspect – will Moldova keep its neutrality status or not, because the rules of the game change. We all know that the NATO Summit will take place in September and we know what direction the changes taking place here follow. We know that the discussions and doubts about the change of Moldova’s neutrality status are intensifying,” stated the expert.

Dmitry Danilov added there is a danger that Moldova’s European perspective will be related to the Euro-Atlantic one. “NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow spoke about this during his visit to this country. There is the danger that Moldova, cooperating closer with the NATO bodies, will be engaged in this process to a greater extent,” he stated.

Earlier, a number of Moldovan politicians said the country must renounce its status of neutrality and must join NATO so as to protect itself in case of a possible invasion by the Russian army.
