Ruslan Popa, who runs for mayor general of the municipality of Chisinau on behalf of the political party “New Historical Option”, proposes that the taxi drivers should use exclusively the lane that is dedicated to public transport. The party submitted a petition to the authorities, asking that they should consider this possibility. According to Ruslan Popa, if the cab drivers travel exclusively on the lane intended for public transport, the city will be decongested and there will be fewer traffic jams.

In a news conference hosted by IPN, the candidate who represents the “New Historical Option” said that over 3,000 taxis are involved in passenger transportation. If they travel exclusively on the right lane, they will be taken out of the common flow of vehicles, from jams and the main arteries of the city will be decongested this way. If the authorities do not accept this proposal, the party will go to court.

Ruslan Popa noted he is sure that if their proposal is accepted, many persons will be motivated to leave their vehicles at home and to use taxis as this way they will quicker get to the destination. This will improve the situation in traffic. In Chisinau, the charges for taxi services are accessible. It is the same public transport, but it is more comfortable.

The party’s chairwoman Svetlana Chesari said that the taxi services are not clearly regulated. “The taxi services are a sector that is intensely supervised by politicians, but not for the purpose of improving the quality of the normative documents, respectively for offering comfort to us, the citizens. They supervise this area only from the perspective of the own benefit, not more. We aim to have fruitful cooperation relations with the public authorities so that the quality of the legal framework is improved and very clear rules concerning the provision of taxi services are set down,” stated Svetlana Chesari.

She encouraged the citizens of Chisinau to give up daily using personal cars so as not to congest the streets. “We, as inhabitants of this city, must also take care of the environment and must demand that crowding should be eased,” urged Svetlana Chesari.
