The Socialist mayor Vasile Cojocaru, who is seeking re-election in Zahoreni village, Orhei, was allegedly battered by the son of a contender running against him. This was announced by the Socialist lawmaker Grigore Novac, who claims that Cojocaru is now being treated in intensive care for “serious injuries”.
Since the contestant in question is a PAS nominee, Novac claims the authorities are trying to hush the incident up and let the perpetrator walk away. The lawmaker added that he will report the case to the parliamentary Human Rights Committee in order to make sure that it’s not swept under the rug.
A spokesperson for the Orhei Police confirmed that a battery incident did take place, adding that the victim was believed to have been drunk when it occurred. An investigation is underway.
