The visit of President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy to Chisinau is a sign that Moldova can count on the European Union’s support in difficult geopolitical conditions, said President Nicolae Timofti, who welcomed the European official before he gave a speech before several hundred people, IPN reports.

Nicolae Timofti stated that without the European officials’ support, Moldova would have been unable to achieve the results that it obtained on its path to European integration. The EU is directly interested in supporting such states as Moldova because it thus ensures stability and peace at its borders.

For his part, Herman Van Rompuy said the Moldovan society must cope with the external pressure and must not believe the misinformation about the European Union. He voiced hope that his visit to Chisinau will be perceived as a sign of support and as assurance that the EU will continue to help Moldova in its European integration efforts.

The President of the European Council noted that the EU considers Moldova a European state with European history and culture and he came to Chisinau to show that he is a friend of the Moldovans.

The European official informed that the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU will be signed on June 27. Initially, it was said that the accord will not be signed earlier than was August.
