Romania’s National Day and the 101st anniversary of the Great Union Day were marked in Chisinau through a series of events. The bust of poet-academician Dumitru Matcovski was unveiled on the Classics Alley in the central park of the capital city with the involvement of people of culture, politicians and persons who knew the poet and admired his works, IPN reports.
“The people continue to be revered by the coming generations by their work, love for the country and nation. Let’s remember the words of the great bard Matcovski: “Cheer your friends and siblings,” mayor general of Chisinau Ion Ceban stated after the unveiling ceremony.
The team of artists consisting of sculptors Victor Macovei and Ruslan Tihonchuk and architect Victor Vieru. was chosen by the Chisinau City Hall at an open municipal contest. The associated costs to the value of 480,000 lei, 283,000 lei of which for assembling, were covered with municipal funds.
On December 1, the Liberal Party and the Liberal Democrat Party of Moldova and other unionist parties laid flowers at the monument to Ruler Stephan the Great and Holy in Chisinau to commemorate the union and congratulated the Romanians everywhere on the occasion of the Great Union Day.
According to the leader of the Liberal Party Dorin Chirtoacă, today’s events will revive the unionist movement in Moldova and time has come for such a movement to ultimately stage the reunification of the nation so as to remove the borders on the Prut River.
On the same occasion, the Association “Generația Unită” (“United Generation”) mounted a march from the monument to Ruler Stephan the Great to the former building of the People’s Council situated on Alexei Mateevici St, where the union with Romania was agreed. The marchers demanded that the two banks of the Prut should be united as this is the only solution for a better life.
On Romania’s National Day, President Igor Dodon, in the name of the citizens of Moldova and in his name, congratulated his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis, wishing him good luck, peace and power to ensure progress for the Romanian people. He noted that the relations between Moldova and Romanian nowadays are based on mutual respect and commitment to the common values, while the strategic partnership continues to develop. He added Moldova is ready to support the extension of the bilateral agenda in areas of common interest and expressed his sincere wish to fully exploit the ties between the two states.
On December 1 it was also celebrated the 101st anniversary of the Great Union after the National Assembly of Romanians, convened in Alba Iulia in 1918, unanimously decided to unconditionally unite Transylvania and Romania.
