Romanians in Moldova could elect MEPs at 36 polling stations

A number of 36 polling stations will be established in Moldova for electing members of the European Parliament from Romania on May 26. The stations will be housed by Romania’s diplomatic and consular missions, buildings of Romanian cultural institution abroad, honorific consulates and other edifices. The most of the polling stations will be set up in Chisinau and Balti, IPN reports.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, 13 polling stations will be established in the municipality of Chisinau, two of which in Balti and by one in Durlești, Ungheni, Soroca, Drochia, Edineț, Fălești, Florești, Telenești, Hâncești, Ialoveni, Nisporeni, Orhei, Căușeni, Anenii Noi, Bardar, Călărași, Cahul, Cantemir, Cimișlia, Giurgiulești, Leova, and Carabetovca.

The Ministry noted that under the legislation, in the elections of May 26, 2019, the Romanian citizens put on the voter rolls of other EU member states can vote to elect Romania’s representatives on the European Parliament only after they sign an own responsibility statement, showing that they haven’t voted in the same elections for European Parliament members from the EU member states on whose registers of voters they are written. To exercise the right to vote, the Romanian citizens should have a valid Romanian identification paper.

A number of 441 polling places were established outside Romania’s borders for the European Parliament elections. Besides Moldova, the largest number of polling stations will be set up in Italy, Spain, the U.S., the UK, Germany, and France.

Elections to the European Parliament are held in Romania for the fourth time since the country joined the EU. The previous elections took place in November 2007, June 2009 and May 2014.
