Romanian soldiers killed in battle commemorated in Soroca

A military-religious ceremony was held at the Cemetery of Heroes of the Romanian Army in Stoicani village of Soroca district on the occasion of the War Veterans Day that is annually marked in Romania on May 29. The event was staged to express gratitude to those who fought to defend the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Romania in World War II, IPN reports.

Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Daniel Ioniță said the Romanian soldiers contributed by their sacrifice to the current peaceful life and they should be honored appropriately. The Romanian heroes killed in the line of duty struggled to defend dignity, freedom and the unity of the whole nation, to ensure our future and the future of our children.

Secretary of state at the Ministry of Defense Vladimir Iliev said Romanian soldiers who fought in war with dignity and courage were buried in Stoicani and other localities of the county. “It is our holy duty to honor the forerunners, especially those who died on the battlefield and who sacrificed what was the most valuable for them – their life,” he stated.

Soroca District Council chairman Gennady Muntean stated this event shows the country does not forget its heroes as these fulfilled their oath of allegiance to the country with dignity and faith.

Ana Bejan, a teacher at the school in Stoicani, related that bones of Romanian soldiers killed in battle were found near the village by German volunteers who came to Moldova to look for German soldiers who died during World War II.

In the event, a group of priests of the Archpriest’s District of Soroca and Florești of the Balti Bishopric of the Bessarabian Metropolitan Church held a service in memory of the heroes who died on the battlefield.

A number of 78 Romanian soldiers were buried at the Cemetery of Heroes of the Romanian Army in Stoicani.
