The protests organized by the Shor Party do not have the capacity to become violent and thus overthrow the current government in Moldova, thinks the Romanian political pundit Radu Carp. Also, according to the commentator, the fact that Prime Minister Dorin Recean is going on his first foreign visit to Bucharest demonstrates a unity of thought between the presidential institution and the Government of Moldova.
On March 1, Prime Minister Dorin Recean will go to Bucharest for his first official foreign visit. This comes after President Maia Sandu traveled to Romania earlier this week to meet her Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis and the Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă.
“It is very important that Dorin Recean has his first visit abroad to Romania. It is a pragmatic and symbolic visit. It so happens that the prime minister also takes the same symbolic route that the president of Moldova did. This is important because it shows a unity of thought in Chisinau. I hope that this unity will be long-term, because there have been periods of unity between the head of state and the prime minister, but it did not last long”, Radu Carp said during a Vocea Basarabiei talk show.
According to the Romanian expert, the threat of destabilization in Moldova can be avoided, as long as the protests organized by the Shor Party do not have the ability to coagulate a critical mass of citizens, capable of determining the change of the political regime.
“The opposition is very heterogeneous. The opposition to the current government is made up of parties that are struggling with their own problems. They send the message that they are not with Russia, while trying to hide some links that do exist. Regarding the protests, I watched what happened on Sunday, but these protests cannot attract that critical mass that could become violent enough to overthrow the government. Of course, Ilan Shor has every interest in destabilizing the situation in Moldova, exploiting some existing problems. They try inflate these problems without explaining to the people that the situation in Moldova cannot miraculously improve. They don’t explain the fact that prices have risen everywhere in the world, that it’s a systemic inflation”, Carp said.
A group of parties spearheaded by the Shor Party, calling itself the National Movement for the People, is holding another rally on February 28. The main demand is for the government to fully underwrite energy bills for all households for the entire winter.
